Unsure if your gas appliances are safe? Keep reading! U.K. Landlords must authorise an annual gas safe check. It’s their legal responsibility to arrange for qualified gas engineers to check that gas in your home is safe.
Landlords must have a gas check in their property, whether it’s a room, house or flat. By law, they must ensure that each check is carried out by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. Gas Safe engineers must also fill in a gas check certificate to clarify all gas works and testing.
To check if a gas engineer is a listed Gas Safe engineer, check their I.D card. It shows they’re qualified, provides their Gas Safe registered number and their name. If none of the above is available or if the individual refuses to show identification, they are instantly breaking the law! It’s easy not to check and to assume the individual is able to carry out gas works, just because they say they can.
Having gas appliances without a gas safe check, is tremendously hazardous and illegal. Ever heard of gas leaks? Gas leaks are the product of poorly maintained gas appliances. The gas (carbon monoxide) is far from safe. It’s odourless, colourless and tasteless, making it a lethal, but silent killer. In the case of death caused by carbon monoxide releases, landlords will automatically be charged for manslaughter.
